Things I Wish I Knew Before Optometry School

by SCCO Student Ambassador, Kaitlyn Luu

As a previous SCCO applicant, I cannot tell you how many hours I spent going through different forums, school websites, and social media pages to learn more about an optometry school. I was constantly worried about my chances of getting accepted, and if I did, what my life would look like in graduate school.

Before applying, I would constantly compare myself to others with more to show and speak about. Whether it was grades, extracurriculars, or clinical experience, I felt that my accomplishments weren’t enough and even considered pushing my application until the next cycle. Thankfully, I decided to apply anyway and am now a second-year student at SCCO!

It may be difficult, but it is important to remember that every applicant has different strengths and weaknesses. The admissions team is especially great at reviewing the holistic student so make sure to put your best foot forward. Don’t let comparison be the reason you doubt yourself for something you have been working hard for!

Aside from the application itself, I also heard about the horror stories of the heavy workload and absent social life in grad school. Having experienced it myself, I can say that it is not completely true. Compared to undergrad, the courses are more intense and fast-paced, but I found that it is manageable. The curriculum is set up to transition students into a heavier workload so by that time, students have better study habits and time management. It also helps that I have about a hundred other classmates who are experiencing the same thing. Optometry school can be challenging, but it is reassuring to have friends who support and encourage me along the way. If I am studying late into the night in the library, I am doing it with my friends beside me. Although we have known each other for a short time, these classmates are the same people who I now consider close friends. Memories of studying, practicing, going out, and having fun are all moments that make optometry school worthwhile!

Now on the other side of things, I can confidently say that optometry school is not as intimidating as it seems and has been very rewarding. No matter where you are in your journey, I hope my experiences can help you navigate yours with a little more ease!
