Optometry is a Legislated Profession

by SCCO Student Ambassador, Justin Alvarez

As you pursue optometry, you’ll start to hear about how the profession has evolved and changed over time. Whether from professors in passing, a doctor you’ve shadowed, or an optometry related newsletter. One thing you’ll find abundantly clear is that optometry is an ever-changing field, as new technologies arise, so do endless opportunities for advancement and growth. However, the reality of these changes combines the concerted efforts of hundreds of students, doctors, and like-minded advocates of optometry over decades. All the progress and major milestones within the profession of optometry have been achieved through the dedication of our colleagues and the changemakers who came before them.

Something you may not know about optometry, is how legislative-dependent it is, and advocacy for the profession allows for the maintenance and advancement of our chosen profession. For example, optometrists weren’t allowed to use dilation drops on patients until ~50 years ago, which is seen as a standard of care today. One of the best parts about advocating is that it doesn’t matter if you’re a well-seasoned advocate or someone who’s never even thought about it, anyone can be an advocate! I discovered the importance of advocacy after attending one of the California Optometric Association’s (COA) meetings at the state Capitol. While I was there, I was surrounded by optometrists who have been championing the profession for decades, some who were there for the first time, optometry students who have been advocating for years, and some who were just starting that day. All were present, and all were welcome to help advance optometry. During these meetings with legislators, they often turned to me or other students in the room to hear what we had to say about the issues being brought forward. Legislators are aware that we are the future of our profession and that’s why our voices and thoughts matter, especially as students.

Advocacy is an important and valuable skill for optometrists and students alike, whether or not your journey begins as a student or a doctor, it’s never too late to start.
